It’s officially farmers’ market season! The availability of local food will only start to increase. I am very excited to get to eat in-season local strawberries and asparagus, and be sure to keep an eye out for Greenbelt farmers’ market price cards!

Farmers’ markets are continuing to grow in popularity as a destination to buy local food. According to a study conducted by the Greenbelt Farmers’ Market Network, demand for fresh vegetables is up 76% in 2015 (up from 63% in 2009). Not only is demand growing but 29% of farm vendors are also reporting that a greater share of revenues are coming from market sales and 63% of farm vendors report that markets are helping them connect more with other buyers.
In the coming weeks make sure to support your local farmers and buy more local food by stopping by at a local farmers’ market.
