Did you know?
A study released by Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy in 2008 reveals that Ontario’s Greenbelt is the world’s largest and most diverse greenbelt- making it truly world-leading.
Where is the Greenbelt?
Greenbelt stretches 325 km from Rice Lake in Northumberland County to the Niagara River and is about 80 kilometers wide at its widest point.

Seasons play an important role in what we grow and how we eat and ultimately defines our food culture and local terroir.
Ice wines are a gift of winter, maple syrup and asparagus a rite of spring. The heat of the summer brings tender fruits, fragrant herbs, sweet corn and carrots, beans and leafy greens. Our crisp falls ripen apples and pears, and offer hearty and hardy root vegetables that last.
Meats, cheeses, eggs, nuts, wine, honey and much more are available in abundance from the Greenbelt anytime. Farmers are using their know-how to extend the seasons for coveted crops like Ontario strawberries and many others grow fresh products year-round in greenhouses. Canning favourites like tomatoes and peppers also extend availability. And new ethno-culture crop varieties like bokchoy, melons, and okra add to what is locally grown across the seasons.
When in doubt about the seasonality of Greenbelt farm product, the following chart offers a quick reference:
