North York Farmers' Market is a small neighbourhood market in the big city.
Located at Mel Lastman Square - a patch of green grass, flowers & trees surrounded by the office towers and condos of North York - the vendors set up around the fountain and along the man-made river that runs through the square.
Office workers & business people stop by on their way to work to check out what's available that day. At break time they come down for a fruit smoothie, warm cookie, or a piece of clafouti baked with whatever fruit is in season.
Lunch choices include sausage on a bun (or peameal bacon, or steak, or hot dogs...), fresh grilled corn on the cob seasoned with a special blend of spices, vegetable rolls made with market vegetables, or just samples of all the fruit, vegetables and cheeses that are for sale.
After lunch baskets of fruit & vegetables, bags of bread, meat, cheeses, honey & jam are lugged back to the office. Our own market chef shops the market each day selecting ingredients for a simple dish which she prepares and then shares with the customers, along with copies of the recipe.
Customers from the area neighbourhoods come on foot, bike, or by car to purchase their produce for the week, taking the time to visit with the farmers that grow it.
