Winterlicious 2011 is around the corner, and this year a record 150 of Toronto’s finest restaurants will be featuring 3 course price-fix menus at exceptional prices. It may be the middle of winter, but many participating restaurants are offering up Greenbelt and Ontario products in their edible creations, so be sure you choose local when selecting your spot for a dinner out. If you need a little help to get started, Local Food Plus has identified three Partner restaurants partaking in Winterlicious 2011 who are committed to sourcing from Certified Local Sustainable farmers and producers – Red’s Bistro, Veritas and Auberge du Pommier.
Red’s Bistro is committed to using local product whenever possible; often pairing with 100 km Foods to provide their guests with produce, meat, and cheese that comes from local farms and producers. Featuring Local Fare is the cornerstone of Veritas’ business, and Chef Brad Long has a long history of advocating the benefits of local and organic food in both his restaurant and in his many television appearances. The a la carte menu at Veritas even boasts a ‘Greenbelt Salad’ featuring sweet and spicy greens, Fuseau artichokes, shaved Pecorino and pear, with a smoked bacon vinaigrette!
On a cold evening, there is nothing better than a rich and savoury French meal and Auberge du Pommier serves it up in style. Their mouth-watering Boeuf Grillé au Poivre features peppered Wellington County beef with warm ragoût of butternut squash, pearl barley and sunchokes. On the lighter side, the Filet de Brochet au Four - baked Lake Erie pickerel with tomato, capers, Picholine olives and lemon cream is also highly recommended. If your taste buds are craving more Canadian style fare, some of the more commercial establishments like Canyon Creek are also featuring local products. Look out for their Ontario Grain-fed Chicken Supreme served with Yukon Gold mash, Carron Farms heirloom carrots, and natural jus. Delicious!
As you can see, if you do a little digging, you can find fantastic local foods featured on menus across the city at this year’s Winterlicious festival. Bon appétit!
